Pearl Jewelry is Back: Why Iconic Accessories are Trending Again

There is probably not a single person who hasn't heard that fashion is cyclical. Trends are born, take over the hearts of fashionistas, and over time, they disappear, but then - come back. However, they often return not the same as before, but in slightly new and sometimes unexpected variations.

This cyclical nature also applies to pearls. In different eras, these jewels, formed in molluscan organisms, symbolized luxury, status, and exquisite taste. Today, pearl jewelry is once again experiencing a real renaissance, but in a more modern, bold, and even engineering interpretation. We invite you to dive into the history of pearls to better understand why they are at the peak of popularity again.

Pearl Jewelry: a Little About History

Pearls are a true classic of jewelry art that has evolved from a symbol of divine connection in antiquity and a measure of power and wealth in the 15th-19th centuries to a must-have accessory of nowadays.

According to some historical sources, pearls were first used in China, Egypt, and Rome. Initially, these precious gems were the equivalent of currency and only a little later they started to be worn as a jewelry.

In the Middle Ages, pearls were considered an attribute of power and wealth because they were difficult to obtain. Specimens with odd shapes were especially popular, making them even more unique and precious. Their wearing was often a privilege of the nobility. It is rumored that the aristocracy of those times even issued laws regarding who could wear accessories with such inserts. Here are some incredibly beautiful accessories from those times:

In the 20th century, pearls became an integral part of elegant women's style thanks to Coco Chanel. It was she who popularized such jewelry and wore the well-known pearl thread necklace. Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly were also fond of pearls.

In the '90s and 2000s, jewelry with light, delicate gems lost its popularity and were replaced by minimalist and restrained pieces. Today, however, they are back in the spotlight, and everyone is wearing them.

Pearls today

Modern pearl jewelry is no longer about classics or formality. They are worn with T-shirts and jeans and are included in sets of rougher or more casual pieces. Designers boldly combine these delicate gemstones with metal elements, colored inserts, non-standard shapes and asymmetry, and sometimes even leather, creating a completely new incarnation of them.

We cannot but say that nowadays pearl accessories have no gender. They are worn by both women and men. This gives complete freedom of expression. So, if you have some pearls in your jewelry box, take them out and show your creativity in styling everyday looks.

On the occasion of the revival of the pearl trend, Orxata, in collaboration with WONÁ by Woná Concept, launched a collection of modern transforming jewelry that can easily change its style from casual to evening.
